Light Pressure

He writes everything down. Except one name.

Cal Ashworth has waited eight seasons in the second launch for this: Cambridge's men's crew, and the Boat Race, in his first season in charge. He counts every stroke anybody rows in front of him. And in the back of his crew book he writes the short, plain lines he has never said to a living soul.

Kit Haldane is a voice the whole country knows, and in March he will call the Boat Race for the first time, the whole race, from the flag. Ten years ago he and Cal were together in secret on the national squad, until a list went up on a corkboard with only one of their names on it. Kit left. He has never said why.

Now his mother's fall has brought him home to the fen, and the only boathouse on the river with a rack free for his single is Cal's. Cal will speak to him only through a megaphone, at sixty metres.

The book lives in a drawer in Cal's office. Every Thursday at half past seven, Kit makes two coffees, sits in Cal's chair, and reads.

He knows what Cal wants before Cal does. He knows it because Cal wrote it down.

And on race day the whole country will be listening, and Kit is the one who has to say his name.

Every right thing Kit does, he read first.

Back Down

Nothing you've read. Not a line of it.

A year ago Kit Haldane spent every Thursday in Cal Ashworth's chair, reading the private pages Cal kept at the end of his crew book. In March, Cal found out, and sent him away with one word.

Twenty-eight weeks later Cal drives him home from a wedding and doesn't take the turn for Ely. In his dark hall, he has terms. Nothing from that drawer. Not the lamp, not the thumb. Whatever Kit wants, he asks for out loud, and Cal will say yes or no.

Cal is in his second season in charge of Cambridge's men. He gives Kit Friday nights in his own house, and every Friday at midnight he sends him home. The first night, he booked the cab before he'd so much as touched him. He hasn't told Kit why. He hasn't told him about the letter from the national squad either, the one he won't open.

Kit calls the Boat Race on television, and a journalist with a warm voice and a notebook has started asking where he rowed ten years ago, and with whom, and why he walked away. Kit can lie on air and make it sound like the truth. Now he is lying to Cal.

Then he is sent six weeks up a river nobody is allowed to name, and for the first time in ten years he writes to Cal.

And on race day, in the commentary box, in front of the whole country, Kit has decided something Cal has told him not to do.

Out loud, or go home.

The Settle

The settle is the part of a race nobody on the bank ever sees.

Twenty strokes in, a crew comes down off the sprint to the rhythm it means to live at. Cal Ashworth can hear a settle from a launch at sixty metres. He has never managed one of his own.

His third season in charge of Cambridge's men opens with two lost Boat Races behind him and his contract up for review in April. He hasn't mentioned that to Kit. Nor has he told him why, in May, he turned down the job that made him.

Kit Haldane has bought a house on the river at Ely and given Cal a key. The voice the whole country knows goes everywhere with him, and Cal has noticed it comes home too. A streamer has twelve weeks of Kit from February, and on race day the schedule has him on a river half a planet away.

A newspaper is asking a question nobody will answer. The crew know before they're told. And in a locked drawer at Ely is the book: a crew list in the front, and in the back Cal's private pages, where he writes about Kit and has never once written his name.

This time Kit wants it in the front.
